5, 6 Pick up Sticks, ...

Terry Souhrada

January 2003

Abstract:

Have you ever played a game with someone who seemed too good at the game to be beaten? Have you ever tried to solve a puzzle that seemed impossible to solve? Have you ever surmounted these obstacles with a good strategy? One type of strategy is to examine the game or puzzle in a simpler form. Coming up with a strategy for the simple form can sometimes lead to a method for the more complex version. Often you can find a pattern and test it in the original version of the game or puzzle. This tactic works well in mathematics and science, too!
