early childhood corner: Teaching with Blocks

April 2009, Volume 15, Issue 8, Page 460

Abstract:
Information and ideas relevant to the development of appropriate mathematics for children in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten. Addresses teacher's need to support young children's emerging mathematics understanding in a context that conforms to current knowledge about the ways young children learn mathematics. Working with blocks provides young students many opportunities to engage in rich mathematics. Students learn early concepts in measurement, number sense, computation, geometry, data analysis, and algebra as they use blocks. Early childhood educators must understand the specific mathematics associated with blocks so that they can help young students build strong foundations in mathematics.
