investigations: Connecting Multiplication to Contexts and Language
April 2009, Volume 15, Issue 8, Page 502
Hands-on, open-ended activities that encourage problem solving, reasoning, communication, and mathematical connections. Activities are classroom-tested, ready for immediate use in the classroom, and contain extensions that the student or teacher might consider. This investigation provides experiences for students to develop the understanding to connect multiplication with language arts and the world around them. The authors used collective nouns and visual images to support students' work with multiplication. Students engaged in creating and illustrating multiplication word problems and developed deeper understanding of the meaning of multiplication by seeing, organizing, and interpreting their world mathematically.
