iSTEM: Promoting fifth graders’ mathematical modeling

Abstract:

The purpose of this investigation was to describe how fifth graders experienced mathematical modeling through the Mysterious Tool activity. They were to determine the relationships among weight, distance, and balance through exploring a lever that students encountered for the first time.

Each month, iSTEM (integrating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) authors share ideas and activities that stimulate student interest in STEM fields in K–grade 6 classrooms.
