1. The editorial staff at NCTM headquarters will copyedit each manuscript for spelling, punctuation, grammar, consistency of style, clarity, and so on. The copyeditors may suggest rewriting for clarity and logical organization and may make recommendations for the readability and integrity of the document. Occasionally, they may suggest substantive changes. The copyedited manuscript, along with queries, will be sent to the lead author, who is expected to review the editing and answer all queries and return the manuscript to NCTM (or to the volume editor) within two weeks.
2. Please do not submit a revised electronic file. All changes should be indicated in a different color from the copyeditors' marks on the copyedited manuscript that is sent to you or on notes appended to the manuscript. Your review should be thorough because NCTM does not make any corrections to the page proofs other than to correct typos or factual errors. When the reviewed manuscript is returned to NCTM headquarters, the production staff will make all the agreed-on changes to the file and format the book according to the design developed by the staff. The lead author should keep the other authors apprised of the status of the book after it is in production.
3. Electronic editing: Your manuscript may be edited electronically by NCTM copyeditors, using the "Track Changes" feature of Microsoft Word. In that event, you will receive an e-mail from the copyeditor with two attachments: one copy will show the "tracked" editing along with the original wording; the other, "clean" copy will have all changes "accepted," so that the text flows smoothly. The editor’s queries will be embedded in the text in brackets or highlighted in yellow. Instructions on how to use the Track Changes feature to answer queries and make further editing suggestions will be included in the e-mail.
4. If the manuscript has been solicited, the lead author accounts for the planning and operational expenses related to the development of the book. Requests for reimbursement should be submitted in a timely manner throughout the project.
Complimentary Copies
The authors of NCTM publications receive no remuneration or royalties. Publishing with NCTM is considered a professional contribution. Book authors, however, will receive complimentary copies of the book and will be entitled to order a limited number of additional copies at half price. The number of complimentary copies and half-price copies depends on the type of publication and number of authors.
