Parabolic Solar Cooker - Teacher Page

Cooking with Parabolas

Teacher Page

Introduction

Audience: Algebra II students

Objective:  Given a webquest on an application of conic sections, students will be able to create a parabolic device that cooks a hotdog placed at its focus at a safe temperature to eat.  They will then test their constructions during an in-class cookout day, and reflect on improvements after discussing classmates' designs. For mastery, they will earn at least 80% of the points on the rubric.

Resources: The teacher needs a TI83 or above graphing calculator with CBL2 unit and temperature probe, or some other way of testing the temperature of the hotdogs on competition day.
