Statement: The support of NCTM is valued by all teachers, especially new teachers. The Council’s ongoing research opportunities, along with its periodicals and webinar interaction, provide a system of learning that enhances the teacher and thereby his or her students. Extending NCTM’s work with equity and diversity and supporting its Affiliates will make this system more powerful. I will work with the Board and the Affiliates to keep communication open and design promotions to welcome new teachers of mathematics into our organization.
The recent addition of the webinars and uses of all the present technologies will assist NCTM in reaching teachers in distant areas, while supporting our mission. I have created community outreach events for my school and community to promote equity and help build the parent-to-school connection. NCTM’s abilities to create positive local outreach activity and reach teachers in many modalities will increase our strength in the areas of curriculum and development as well. I would welcome the opportunity to work toward that goal.
I look forward to working on the NCTM Board, while maintaining strong ties with its Affiliates and continuing the work of creating equity and diversity in mathematics. I believe that social justice in education can be promoted through work with affiliates and other stakeholders. My experience with mathematics, new teachers, and English language learners will strengthen my ability to fulfill this goal.
