Statement: NCTM is doing many wonderful things and should be continuing to look at ways to expand its work. NCTM should expand professional learning to continue to ensure that its members are able to teach effectively. One such way is through monthly webinars to allow members to participate at their convenience. The webinars could highlight new NCTM publications as well as address a variety of topics. NCTM should also co-host some of these webinars with other organizations to expand its sphere of influence as well as use the expertise of many. A second way to build professional skill is through book studies to encourage members to read and reflect further on effective mathematics education.

NCTM should also expand the sharing of research. Many classroom teachers don’t have the time to read research, so NCTM should find ways to summarize new findings effectively and share them with all members to clearly highlight the role of using research to inform classroom practice.

To remain effective and healthy, NCTM needs to continue to expand its membership. It can actively seek partnerships with universities to recruit preservice and early-career teachers. NCTM can also better highlight the benefits of membership so that it retains members.

To the NCTM Board, I will bring dedication as well as the ability to understand multiple perspectives and then work to bring agreement about a solution. I bring a passion for improving mathematics education for all.
