Statement: Within NCTM, we must work to increase our membership and expand our outreach to teachers of mathematics. Teachers today communicate in very different ways from the past, and NCTM must make use of the new media while building on its current strengths to reach a wider audience. For example, the quality of NCTM’s conferences is one of the Council’s greatest strengths, and we must think proactively about ways to share content from conference sessions virtually to reach a larger group of the membership and to extend the conference experience for those in attendance.
Given the current challenges related to teacher retention, outreach to new teachers is imperative. I believe that NCTM should play a vital role in developing strategies to support new teacher induction, undertake specific initiatives to benefit early-career teachers, and develop resources for affiliates and others engaged in mathematics teacher induction. We must ensure that the next generation of mathematics teachers is well supported and given the benefit of all the resources of NCTM.
To the NCTM Board, I will bring a passion for supporting students and teachers of mathematics. I will promote a spirit of collaboration and mutual respect that will benefit the NCTM membership and enhance the work of its leadership.
