NCTM/SIAM/COMAP Joint Committee on Modeling Across the Curriculum

  • The Committee is composed of three members appointed from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) including an NCTM Board Liaison, three members appointed from the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and three members appointed from the Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications (COMAP). One of the three members from each of SIAM and COMAP should be appointed to serve as liaison to the respective organization’s leadership. The chair of the committee rotates between the three societies and serves a two-year term as chair.

     Term length: Three years, with the possibility of one additional consecutive term.

    Committee Charge

    The NCTM/SIAM/COMAP Joint Committee on Modeling Across the Curriculum is charged to: 

    1. Provide national leadership for the inclusion of modeling with mathematics in the K-16 mathematics curriculum, including professional learning for preservice and in-service teachers.
    2. Promote awareness among teachers, administrators, policymakers, families, and the broader public about current applications of mathematics and the importance of including applications in the teaching of mathematics.
    3. Advocate for and share equity-oriented uses of mathematical modeling within K-16 mathematics, including ways to draw on students’ experiences and perspectives, develop and strengthen students’ mathematical agency and identities, and raise awareness of societal issues and the role of mathematics in addressing these issues.
    4. Increase channels of communication between the three organizations. Examples include, but are not limited to, newsletter articles, organizing informational sessions at organization meetings, and presenting webinars.

    This committee will meet three times in each of the first two years, then twice a year thereafter.
