Hank Kepner has experience as a middle grades and high school mathematics teacher, a professor, and an associate dean, as well as a program officer at the National Science Foundation. Since 1982 he has been Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee.

Kepner has published articles related to both mathematics and teacher education. He has authored resource books and journal articles published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the National Education Association. In addition, he has played key leadership roles in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators, the International Society for Technology in Education, the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics, the School Science and Mathematics Association, and the Wisconsin Mathematics Council. Kepner began serving a two-year term as president of the Council in April 2008.

Kepner has received numerous honors and awards, including an Excellence in Teaching Award from the University of Wisconsin (2004) and a Distinguished Mathematics Educator Award from the School Science and Mathematics Association (2003).  In addition, he was recognized as the Wisconsin Mathematics Council’s Distinguished Mathematics Educator (1987). He has also been the principal investigator on grants from the National Science Foundation and Department of Education. Kepner holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics and a Ph.D. in mathematics education, all from the University of Iowa.
