Kiya and Jerome were working together to create a game for their math project. Kiya created a game she calls Odds vs. Evens. Here's how to play:

    • Use two spinners, each with the numbers 1 through 6 on them.
    • Spin both spinners and find the product of the two numbers.
    • Player A gets a point if the product is odd.
    • Player B gets a point if the product is even.

After playing 20 rounds of the game, Jerome said, "I think we're going to have to change the rules, because this game doesn't seem fair."

    1. Which player has the advantage in this game, Player A or Player B? Explain how you know.
    2. About how many points would you expect Player A to have after 20 rounds? Explain.

Note: If you'd like to try playing this game, you can use dice instead of spinners.

Extra: How could you adjust the rules of Kiya and Jerome's game of products to make the game fair? Explain your thinking.

[Mathematicians consider a game to be fair if all players have an equal chance of winning.]

    • did you realize that 3 on the left and 5 on the right is a different outcome than 5 on the left and 3 on the right ?
    • did you check your arithmetic?

If your answer does match ours,

    • is your explanation clear and complete?
    • did you show how you know your answer is right?
    • did you try the Extra?
    • did you have any "Aha!" moments or notice any patterns? Describe them.
