New content standards may improve overall student achievement but are unlikely to reduce existing learning differentials. To ensure that mathematics works for all students, program improvement efforts must address the six principles outlined in NCTM's Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All. This presentation will discuss the six principles and outline the actions needed to overcome the obstacles that have traditionally stood in the way of making mathematics work for all students.

Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices that Support Learning for All Students: A Focus on Middle and High School 

This session will focus on a set of eight research-based teaching practices that constitute a vision of effective teaching that will support enactment of ambitious standards for all students. During the session participants will have the opportunity to discuss descriptions and examples of each of the practices and consider ways to help teachers learn and refine practices.

Using Identity and Agency to frame Access and Equity Principle

This session will use vignettes and the voices of students, teachers, and other school personnel to highlight the Access and Equity Principle. Specifically, the session will use ideas of identity and agency as a framework for discussing the obstacles to implementing this Principle and ways to overcome these obstacles as described in Principles to Actions. This session will conclude with a discussion of teaching practices that cultivate identity and agency to support Access and Equity.
