FakeWorld Math: Why Modeling Goes Wrong (And How to Get It Right)

Meyer works with thousands of math educators every year and finds more disagreement about the CCSS modeling standard than any other. So he has set out to answer the questions, What is modeling, How do we get our students to do it, and How do we get our students to like it?

    Strands

Linking Mathematical Practices to Content Standards Icon   Linking Mathematical Practices to Content Standards This strand focuses on how students can meet the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice as an integral part of learning mathematical content.

Equity Icon   Equity All students regardless of their gender, color, ethnicity, culture, or physical challenges must have an equal opportunity to attain academic success in mathematics.  Sessions in this strand will address math instructional strategies that maximize the learning potential of all students.
Data and Statistics Icon   Data and Statistics Data Analysis and Statistics occupy a larger and more permanent place in the k-12 curriculum.  This strand will offer sessions ranging from the history of statistics education to effectively teaching statistics content in the classroom.
Mathematical Modeling Icon   Mathematical Modeling Mathematical modeling as a K-12 Mathematical Practice is a unique process used to represent and interpret the physical, social, and mathematical phenomena in everyday life.  Sessions in this strand examine the use of mathematical modeling in a variety of content areas.
Assessment Icon   Assessment The Assessment strand sessions focus on classroom assessments, including formative assessment and assessing students’ achievement of the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice.
Developing a Classroom Community Icon   Developing a Classroom Community The Developing a Classroom Community strand features sessions on the importance of classroom and school environments supportive of student success in mathematics and techniques to develop them.

    RegionalConference Topics

In addition to the focus strands, presentations will cover current math education topics, including the following:

    • Algebra
    • Assessment
    • Calculus & Discrete Mathematics
    • Communication, Connections & Representation
    • Data Analysis & Probability
    • Equity & Diversity Issues
    • Geometry & Measurement

    Format and Presentation Types

    Sessions
With a wide variety of topics, new ideas, and innovations for your classroom, you and your students will benefit from the wide selection of sessions. Both sessions and research sessions will be 60 minutes and set in theater-style rooms.

    Gallery Workshops
Gallery workshops are 90 minutes long and allow attendees to participate in hands-on activities, with additional gallery seating for observers. You’ll walk away with manipulatives, activities, and handouts for your classroom.

    Exhibitor Workshops
Looking for more in-depth and personal interaction with exhibitors? If you do, plan to attend the Exhibitor Workshops. Held on Thursday and Friday, these workshops showcase exhibitors' products and services, with hands-on demonstrations and detailed information. You’ll find these presentations marked in program books with the symbol  Exhibitor Workshop Icon.

Note: All presentations are open to conference participants. Admission will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Reserving spaces in line or saving seats is not permitted.
