Shifting the Paradigm: Building Self Directed Math Learners at HHS

Meaningful learning cannot happen in math classes where students “hate” math, lack confidence, and see little relevance between mathematical thinking and their own lives. The goal of this grant is to change this paradigm for the college preparatory level 12th grade students who take Pre-Calculus at Hopkinton High School (HHS). This grant will immerse HHS seniors in an innovative math classroom where technology and student-centered, digital-age pedagogical practices help to make learning more interactive, hands-on, and engaging. This approach will help students become better prepared academically for the rigors of post-secondary life not only by helping students to learn and make sense of mathematical ideas and to reason mathematically, but also by honing their self-directed learning and collaboration skills.
