Building Teacher Capacity to Support Mathematical Reasoning and Language Acquisition in English Learning Students
In the face of rapidly increasing population of English learning (EL) students enrolled at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, we plan to meet the need to support our emerging bilingual students by training all our mathematics teachers on effective research-based classroom strategies that support mathematics learning and English language acquisition in EL students. The specific EL math strategies for the workshops will be drawn from the high leverages practices from TeachingWorks (2018), the NCTM Taking Action: Implementing Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices (NCTM, 2017), and other current research on best practices for serving EL students in mathematics. To provide mutual support to our teachers as we adopt these new strategies, we will form an in-school professional learning community (PLC) to regularly reflect on successes and challenges in supporting our EL students.
