Students Take Measure: Explorations Along the Appalachian Trail

Thirty-five miles of the Appalachian Trail meander through Botetourt County, Virginia, yet relatively few students enrolled in the public school system have ventured upon this national treasure. By putting learning in the context of the Virginia Highlands section of "The People's Trail," sixth grade students at Central Academy Middle School will engage in enriching, hands-on lessons designed to develop and apply measurement and multiplication skills. Through explorations into pedometers and pacing, pounds and packs, capacity and snacks, even the occasional animal tracks, students will be immersed in the local landscape, and exposed to the tools and real-world problem solving necessary for successful wilderness experiences.
