    Articles: ( What's This?)
    • “Between the Wholes: Promoting Fraction and Decimal Understanding” (focus 10/15 TCM)
Articles in this special issue examine the mathematics that lies "between the wholes,” as in whole numbers. This issue presents a developmental series of ideas on instructional strategies and research on fractions and decimals for K-grade 6 students.
    • “Creating Classroom Communities” (focus 11/15 MT)
Classroom communities embrace individuals and foster communication. But how do we, as teachers, make that happen? Six feature articles in this Focus Issue, and five more in upcoming months, highlight ways to capitalize on the diversity in our schools. Equitable discourse, student participation, opportunities to listen, supportive environments, variety, and collaboration all play a role in establishing strategies and norms that we can adopt or adapt for our own classrooms.

    • “Mathematical Modeling” (focus 2/15 MTMS)
The February 2015 MTMS Focus Issue on Mathematical Modeling contains articles that provide teachers and teacher educators with not only activities that can be used in the classrooms but also strategies for finding and creating lessons that support mathematical modeling.
    • “Probability and Statistics” (focus 2/16 MTMS)
The MTMS February 2016 Focus Issue, titled Probability and Statistics, explores a neglected strand of mathematics that is extremely relevant to the daily lives of students and adults.
    • 2014 APME eBook Ch 1: Transitioning to Common Mathematics Standards: Computational Fluency (PDF Downloads)
This PDF file presents a chapter of Annual Perspectives in Mathematics 2014: Using Research to Improve Instruction in a downloadable file that preserves the design and layout of the book while allowing users to search and print selected pages. Chapter 1: “Transitioning to Common Mathematics Standards: Computational Fluency in the K–5 Curriculum.” Dawn Teuscher (Brigham Young University), Barbara J. Reys (University of Missouri), Shannon Dingman (University of Arkansas), and Amanda Thomas (Penn State Harrisburg) compare and contrast the approach and progression of computational fluency with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals within the Common Core. They point out important issues that teachers will face as they address computational fluency in their own instruction. Please note: This product can only be purchased via NCTM’s online catalog.
