15 Months and Counting Until Orlando

Welcome to the first blog post about the 2017 NCTM Regional Conference & Exposition in Orlando! In this and future posts, you'll find the most up-to-date information about the conference, October 18–20, 2017.

We envision this to be a place for a variety of members in the math education community to engage in the planning and development of the conference. We like to envision the event as a community-built experience. This communication platform will provide a means to do just that and it will be your opportunity to offer your input as we plan speakers, events, sessions, and more.

We'll also use this space as a place to announce keynote and major speakers, special events, and more before the conference. Be sure to stay tuned as we make announcements over the next year.

We're currently planning the opening session and our first request is for your feedback. Please fill out this Google form by August 31 to let us know what you'd like from an opening session experience. We encourage you to share this link widely via social media, email, back-to-school presentations, etc.

It's our hope the Regional Conference in Orlando will reflect and represent the diversity of our profession. As we look to build a conference that is inclusive, we welcome, value, and need your input.

I missed the deadline to fill out a suggestion for opening session, but since there's a comment page I'll give it a shot. Since Annie Fetter is on the committee I think it would be great to have a celebration of the work of the math forum over the last umpteen years. They  deserve it! Also your blog idea is wonderful. Finally we can follow whats going on behind the scenes and be able to contribute to make it the best regiional conference ever!

Thanks Ihor! These are fabulous suggestions and we too are enamoured with the incredible work happening at the Math Forum and think it's a great idea to share that.  Keep your eyes on the blog for other chances to provide your input and see speaker/event announcements!  -Zak

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments and feedback Linda! There are some really great ideas here and you can be sure that the 2017 Orlando team will be taking this into account. We are particularly fond of investigating one task (by grade band) in depth. That kind of work is often overlooked during the hustle and bustle of the school year and I think conferences are exactly the place to do it! Thanks again! -Zak

Would love to see a strand on the effective teaching practices from Principles to Actions!  And maybe how they connect to the standards for mathematical practice.  Perhaps choosing a rich task for K-2,  a rich task for 3-5, for 6-8, for HS .... and having teachers see how that task is developed using the ETP's as background.  Similar to what is in the toolkit on the NCTM website but live and in person where the teachers are actively participating in practical examples.  Make the ETP's come alive!

Thanks for all the work you are doing on bahalf of NCTM's members!
