NCTM's Regional Conference in Indianapolis, October 29-31

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and the Indiana Council of Teachers of Mathematics will host a regional conference and exposition in Indianapolis, October 29

31. The conference invites educators to learn effective, innovative teaching strategies and hear exciting, highly regarded speakers who will inspire them to become better teachers.
Presenters at the conference will come from all areas of Indiana. Presentations will also be given by educators from surrounding states and throughout the United States. The conference will offer more than 200 sessions and workshops, covering all levels of mathematics teaching, pre-K
-
grade 12. The sessions support an array of topics, including linking mathematical practices to content standards, equity in mathematics education, data and statistics, mathematical modeling, assessment, and developing a classroom community.
Keynote speaker Dan Meyer, Stanford University, will answer key questions: What is mathematical modeling? How do we get our students to do it? How do we get our students to like it? Meyer's Opening Session, "Fake World Math: Why Modeling Goes Wrong (And How to Get It Right)" will kick off the conference on Wednesday, October 29, 5:30

7:00 p.m., at the Indiana Convention Center, 500 Ballroom.
On Thursday and Friday, October 30 and 31, an interactive workshop will offer tips to all new and preservice teachers on ways to manage classrooms, work with parents, find engaging lessons, and handle homework. The sessions will run from 9:45

11:00 a.m. at the Westin, Grand Ballroom 3.
On Thursday, October 30, NCTM President Diane Briars will discuss the most effective teaching practices to support students' development of conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and the habits of mind required for high-level mathematics learning. This session, "Turning College and Career-Ready Standards into Student Learning: What It Takes" will examine the presentation of these essential practices in NCTM's new
Principles to Actions Ensuring Mathematical Success for All
. The session is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. to noon in the Convention Center, 500 Ballroom.
All conference activities will be held at the Indiana Convention Center and Westin Indianapolis. In addition, hundreds of the latest education products will be on display in the NCTM Exhibit Hall of the Indiana Convention Center on Thursday, October 30, 8:00 a.m.
