Thousands of Math Educators Gather in San Francisco for Nation’s Premier Math Education Event

Reston, Va., April 5, 2016-The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) will offer more than 700 sessions and workshops covering all levels, pre-K-grade 12, at its 2016 NCTM Annual Meeting & Exposition in San Francisco. The four-day conference, April 13-16, will feature presenters from San Francisco and all across the country and will offer insights into implementation and assessment of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, best practices directly from experts in mathematics education, new ideas for integrating mathematics into other disciplines and supporting student learners, among many other topics.

“Every year we bring the best and the brightest to NCTM's Annual Meeting,” said NCTM President Diane Briars. “Whether you are entering the teaching profession, you are in the classroom, you support teachers or you conduct research, you will find interesting sessions and meet new colleagues during this meeting.”

Keynote speaker Eric Jolly, president and CEO of Minnesota Philanthropy Partners, Saint Paul, Minn. will kick off the conference with the session “Inspiring Change: Creating the Next Generation of Mathematics Leaders and Learners.” He will draw on his work with learners across the nation and his recent work for the National Research Council. Jolly will review the inspirational stories and lessons that enable us to envision approaches to mathematical engagement that will create a math-literate generation.  Jolly is widely recognized for his work with communities and policymakers and has published numerous articles and books. Jolly's session will take place on Wednesday, April 13 from 5:30-7:00 p.m.

Highlighting relevance and making connections to the real world are often seen as the most effective strategies for engaging students in difficult mathematics, but both strategies are limited and can fail in crucial ways. Dan Meyer, Chief Academic Officer at Desmos in San Francisco, will add strategies and look at research-based methods for “developing a question” instead. Meyer taught high school mathematics to students who didn't like high school math. He has advocated for better math instruction on CNN, Good Morning America, Everyday With Rachael Ray, and TED.com. Meyer's session will be on Saturday April 16 from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m.

Conference activities will take place at Moscone Center and the Marriott Marquis. Attendees may register on-site at the Convention Center at the following times: Wednesday, April 13, 8:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.; Thursday, April 14, 7:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.; Friday, April 15, 7:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.; and Saturday, April 16, 7:00-10:00 a.m.

In addition, hundreds of the latest education products will be on display in the Exhibit Hall on Thursday and Friday, April 14-15, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., and Saturday, April 16, 8:00 a.m.-noon.

Hill Harper, award-winning actor, best-selling author, and philanthropist will close the conference with “The Future: The Energized Educator.” Harper starred on the CBS TV drama CSI: NY from 2004 to 2013 followed by two seasons on USA's Covert Affairs. He is the author of four New York Times best sellers and is founder of the Manifest Your Destiny Foundation, dedicated to empowering underserved youth through mentorship, scholarship, and grant programs (Saturday, April 16 12:30-1:30).
