The Financial World

The articles in the Financial World offer students opportunities to consider questions they will confront as adult consumers. All students need to develop financial literacy in order to improve the quality of their lives as adults.  By applying mathematics to real-world financial contexts, students begin to see the relevance and usefulness of mathematics.

  • Is the mortgage loan offered to me by my bank fair?  Percents and exponential functions and equations are needed to investigate a mortgage loan offer.
  • How long will it take for me to pay off the balance on my credit card?  When should I not use a credit card?  Percents and interest rates are critical here.

Activities in these articles serve two related purposes: they demonstrate what mathematics is used in a particular consumer or business context, and they empower our students as adults to approach financial decisions with the confidence that arises from familiarity.
