I enjoy inspiring and motivating students, friends, and colleagues to engage in mathematical thinking. When my children were teenagers, I would leave random cards from the 24® game on tables in the family room. When their friends would come over, they would instantly grab a card and would try to figure out how the four numbers could equal twenty-four. I often put stimulating problems on our department bulletin board and find colleagues and students gathered around, discussing possible strategies and solutions. I have posted problems on Facebook® and have been surprised at the number of folks who respond with solutions. My secret plan in all these situations was to engage family, friends, colleagues, and students in challenging problems to promote mathematical reasoning and problem solving.
