In this comprehensive review of research on the learning and teaching of measurement, Smith and Barrett highlight and synthesize results for length, area, volume, angle, and time measurement around three foci – the development of students’ understandings, the character of curricular approaches, and teachers’ knowledge and practice. Since most research and curriculum development have treated each measured quantity as a distinct topic, the review is structured by the five focal quantities. But Smith and Barret also draw connections among quantities and argue that the shared base of conceptual principles merits greater attention. Their review also shows scarce research attention to angle and time measurement.
