Closing the long-standing gap between research and practice is a critical step in the evolution of mathematics education into a profession. In an effort to help close the gap, Silver and Lunsford explore several metaphors for understanding the relationship between research and practice, identify important aspects of this relationship, and highlight critical unresolved issues that must still be addressed. They suggest productive pathways for addressing these unresolved issues.
