Mathematics education researchers are increasingly considering the multimodal nature of mathematical meanings in teaching and learning. The authors explore how research is conceptualizing physical artifacts, the interplay between movement and language, and students’ perceptions and imaginations as contributing to mathematical meaning-making. They thoroughly discuss theories of embodiment in mathematics teaching and learning, including Piagetian inspired theory, semiotic oriented theory, enactivism, and phenomenological and materialist approaches.
