Determining what is happening in mathematics education in a country as large and complex as the United States is difficult—even for those who are familiar with U.S. education. To promote and extend understanding, this report—

• gives general information about education in the United States;
• describes the intended, implemented, and attained curricula in school mathematics;
• surveys the emergence of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics;
• examines U.S. participation in international studies of mathematics achievement; and
• previews the Every Student Succeeds Act, the new federal education law passed by the U.S. Congress at the end of 2015.

The fact book also includes sections detailing programs for high-achieving students, programs for mathematics teacher education, and resources for additional information about mathematics education in the United States.

Prepared for the Thirteenth International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME-13) under the auspices of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the United States National Commission on Mathematics Instruction, this fact book brings together the latest information available as of early 2016. It updates the fact book prepared for ICME-12 in 2012 and is the fifth fact book in the series that began in 1999 when the U.S. National Commission on Mathematics Instruction recommended that NCTM request funds from the National Science Foundation to prepare the first fact book, which was distributed at ICME-9 in 2000.
