Chapter 14: Beyond
Puzzles: Young Children’s Shape Composition Abilities.
David Wilson
(Buffalo State College, State University of New York) describes the findings of
research conducted in developing a learning trajectory for children’s
shape-composition abilities. He discusses what can be learned about students’
understanding of geometric shapes and their properties from observing children
while they solve puzzles of one form or another, match letters or shapes to a
cutout form, assemble multiple pieces to make a picture, and play with wooden
blocks or pattern blocks. The developmental progression and complete learning
trajectory were created in collaboration with teachers; and the description,
assessment, and labeling of the levels was designed to maintain its
comprehensibility.
