Chapter 19: Affecting Affect: The Reeducation of Preservice Teachers’
Beliefs about Mathematics and Mathematics Teaching and Learning.
Peter Liljedahl (Simon Fraser
University, Burnaby, British Columbia), Katrin Rolka , and Bettina Rösken (both
of University of Duisburg-Essen, Duisburg, Germany) discuss the deep-seated
beliefs that preservice teachers have about mathematics that often run counter
to contemporary research on what constitutes good practice. In their article
they present research on a mathematics teaching methods course specifically
designed to integrate learning outcomes with belief outcomes. In particular,
they used reflective journals to examine how a group of preservice elementary
school teachers’ beliefs about mathematics and the teaching and learning of
mathematics evolved as a result of being enrolled in the methods course.
