Schunk and Kerri Richardson (University of North Carolina at Greensboro) contend that an important means of raising students’ motivation for mathematics learning is by developing their self-efficacy (perceived capabilities) for learning and performing well. The authors present research to substantiate this point and offer suggestions for enhancing self-efficacy and motivation in mathematics classrooms.
