Chapter 9: What Motivates Mathematically Talented Young Women? Hortensia Soto-Johnson, Cathleen Craviotto, and Frieda Parker (University of Northern Colorado) explored why high school girls who participated in a summer mathematics camp pursued the study of mathematics. Through interviews and surveys, the researchers discovered that personal and academic goals, disposition toward mathematics, and environmental factors such as family and friends all motivated the young women to do well in mathematics. The authors here give teaching implications based on their findings.
