a MATHEMATICAL HIGH pointTAIPEI 101 has 101 floors above ground and five floors below. It was the first building in the world to be taller than half a kilometer and, from 2004 to 2010, it was the tallest building in the world. Taipei 101 set several records, including having the world’s fastest elevator. It is one of the most stable buildings ever made, able to withstand gale winds of up to 134 miles per hour and very strong earthquakes. There is a great deal of symbolism in the name of the building. The new century dawned with the construction of the building, and the number 101 represented the past century and the new year. The number 100 is often considered to be a symbol of perfection; 101 represents improvement on perfection.
