Benjmain Banneker
Week: A Celebration Honoring the Life and Accomplishments of Benjamin Banneker! I would like to
encourage you to take part in this year’s Benjamin Banneker Week Celebration.
Benjamin Banneker Week is Celebrated during ONE day (class period) within the
week of November 9th each year and can be conducted in grades Pre-K through
12th grade. The focus of this day is on Mathematics and has two common ideas
for activities: 1. Constructing a Creative Clock Face using mathematics to
create the numbers 1-12-since Banneker created a wooden clock that held
accurate time for over 40 years; or 2. Creating a Mathematical Poem similar to
that of Banneker’s Famous Historic Writings. I have attached the flyer for the
event for your viewing and sharing. This is a national event sponsored by the
Benjamin Banneker Association, an affiliate of the National Council of Teachers
of Mathematics (NCTM). Since we began two years ago we have had several student
and teacher winners from Little Rock, AR; Earl, AR; Forrest City, AR; Nashville,
TN; Hartford, CT; and Washington D.C. We encourage all members of NCTM and the
Benjamin Banneker Association to make Benjamin Banneker Week a reality for the
students within your reach. There are several students who would enjoy engaging
in the creativity that Banneker used as a Mathematician, Scientist, Inventor,
and Writer. Global Collaboration
Parallel Task: Educators are encourage to conduct this event in their classroom
or their respective communities.
