Ross Taylor Symposium
for Mathematics Education and Leadership: How do we build powerful numeracy in our students, from early
grades through high school? How can we help ALL students automatize the facts?
What is real math versus “fake math”? We will work with and experience teaching
strategies to help all students construct numerical relationships so that they
can be successful at their grade level while also building their understanding
for continued success in later grades. Participants will study the lesson
structures of problem strings and problem talks - how these tasks work together
to help students construct mental connections that enable them to use powerful
strategies and solve real problems. We’ll discuss an overall vision, focus on
specific examples across the grade levels, and point out some of the common
pitfalls that can derail honest efforts. Though the book title highlights
middle and high school students, this session is designed for all grade levels
and all adults The symposium will be held at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center – Duluth, MN.
