Catalyzing Change in Early Childhood and Elementary Mathematics:
Dismantling Inequitable Structures, Nurturing Math Identities, and Planning Actionable Steps

Dates: Wednesday, September 28, 2022, 9:00 am - 4:30 pm PT
Cost: $150 with purchase of full annual meeting registration / $200 to attend only the Preconference Workshop

Description:
How might we ensure that each and every child is afforded opportunities to develop into a mathematically confident and capable learner? How do we develop high-quality mathematics programs that are equitable, just, and inclusive and that emphasize the wonder, joy, and beauty of mathematics? In this workshop, we will present four recommendations for engaging early childhood and elementary school stakeholders in critical and needed conversations. Explore, discuss, and plan actions for broadening the purposes of learning mathematics, creating equitable structures, implementing equitable instruction, and developing deep mathematical understanding.

Participants will:

  • Investigate tasks, children’s work samples, and classroom vignettes that highlight exemplary mathematics teaching practices.
  • Examine and reflect on the power of mathematical identities for students and teachers.
  • Surface and discuss inequitable structures that inhibit children’s mathematical agency and hinder access to deep mathematical understanding.
  • Develop action steps to initiate needed changes in early childhood and elementary school mathematics.

Presenters:
DeAnn Huinker, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Milwaukee, WI
Anne Marie Marshall, Lehman College, City University of New York, Bronx, NY
