Nat Banting is a classroom mathematics teacher and university lecturer from Saskatoon, Canada who blogs about teaching math at natbanting.com/blog, tweets as @NatBanting, and curates the online resource fractiontalks.com. He was named the winner of the 2019 Rosenthal Prize for Innovation and Inspiration in Math Teaching awarded by the National Museum of Mathematics, and he received the Field Institute’s 2019 Margaret Sinclair Memorial Award recognizing innovation and excellence across Canadian mathematics education. More recently, his work across mathematics education earned him a 2021 Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence in STEM.

Dr Jo Boaler is the Nomellini & Olivier Professor of Education at Stanford University. Former roles have included being the Marie Curie Professor of Mathematics Education in England, and a mathematics teacher in London comprehensive schools. She is author of 18 books, numerous articles and a White House presenter on women and girls. Her latest book is called: Limitless Mind: Learn, Lead and Live without Barriers and is published by Harper Collins. She co-founded www.youcubed.org to give teachers, parents and students the resources they need to excite students about mathematics. She is currently one of the writing team creating a new Mathematics Framework for the state of California, co-leading a K-12 Data Science Initiative and was named as one of the 8 educators “changing the face of education” by the BBC.

Over more than 55 years, Marilyn Burns has taught K–8 math students, created more than 20 professional resources, led professional learning sessions, spoken at conferences, contributed to professional journals, and written more than a dozen books for children. Dr. Childs earned his doctor of philosophy in mathematics education from the University of Central Florida, his master of science in mathematics education from Nova Southeastern University, and his bachelor of science in computer engineering from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University.

Kevin has been an 8th grade math teacher in southwest Michigan for over 25 years.  Kevin is the co-author of Productive Math Struggle. He also conducts many professional development sessions throughout the United States on the use of manipulatives in the math classroom to develop a conceptual understanding of the math.  Kevin served on the Board of Directors for NCTM from 2016-2019 and is currently President-Elect for this school year before becoming President in October 2022.  

He was awarded the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics Regional Director's Award in 2007 for outstanding contribution and leadership in mathematics education as well as the Service Award in 2014 and has served as a regional director for the organization.  He was the annual conference chair for the organization from 2011-2016 as well as co-founded and co-chaired since 2015 for a conference focused on mathematics for students with disabilities.  Kevin was a 2017 state finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.  He received an Alumni Achievement Award from Western Michigan University in 2019.

Graham Fletcher has served in education as a classroom teacher, math instructional lead, and currently as a math specialist. Graham’s work with the math progressions and problem-based lessons has led him to present throughout North America and beyond. He is continually advocating for best practice in elementary mathematics by seeking new and innovative ways to support students and teachers in their development of conceptual understanding.

Chip Heath is the co-author of the forthcoming Making Numbers Count.  He is the co-author (along with his brother, Dan) of four best-selling books: The Power of Moments: Why Certain Experiences Have Extraordinary Impact , Decisive: How to Make Better Decisions in Life and Work, Switch: How to Change Things When Change is Hard, and their first book, Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die, which was an Amazon Top 10 Business Book for both editors and readers. Their books have been translated into over 30 languages including Thai, Arabic, and Lithuanian. 

Chip is currently a professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and, most recently, the Heath brothers released their third best-seller, Decisive: How to Make Better Choices in Life and Work.

Dr. Shelly M. Jones is a Professor at Central Connecticut State University. She teaches undergraduate mathematics content and methods courses for pre-service teachers and graduate level mathematics content, curriculum and STEM courses for in-service teachers.Her research focus includes characterizing teachers experience with implementing culturally relevant mathematics.

Prior to her position at CCSU, Dr. Jones was a middle school Mathematics Teacher and K-12 Mathematics Supervisor. She provides professional development opportunities throughout the United States and abroad.

Currently Dr. Jones is President-Elect of the Benjamin Banneker Association and Position Papers Editor of NCSM: Leadership in Mathematics Education. She serves on the Education Advisory Board for Teachers 2 Teachers Global and as a Board Member for the Inspire Math Foundation, Inc. Dr. Jones is also a member of NCTM, TODOS: Mathematics for ALL, AMTEC, ATOMIC and CCLM.

Shelly’s accomplishments have earned her recognition on the Mathematically Gifted Black website as a Black History Month 2019 Honoree.

Robert Kaplinsky has been an educator since 2003 as a classroom teacher, teacher specialist for Downey Unified School District, instructor for the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and presenter at conferences around the world. He co-founded the website Open Middle, has been published in Edutopia and Education Week, is the author of Open Middle Math: Problems That Unlock Student Thinking, and created the #ObserveMe movement.  He’s also the founder and president of Grassroots Workshops.

Dr. Steven Khan is an Assistant Professor in Mathematics Education at Brock University with interests in teacher preparation, ethnomathematics, and multispecies flourishing. 

Nicole M. Joseph is an associate professor with tenure of mathematics education in the department of Teaching and Learning at Vanderbilt University. She is also the Director of the Joseph Mathematics Education Research Lab (JMEL) which trains undergraduate and graduate students in Black Feminist and Intersectionality epistemological orientations producing theoretical and methodological practices that challenge hegemonic notions of objectivity to emphasize humanizing, empowering, and transformative research. 

Dr. Joseph’s research explores two lines of inquiry, (a) Black women and girls, their identity development, and their experiences in mathematics and (b) gendered anti-blackness, whiteness, white supremacy and how these systems of oppression shape Black girls’ and women’s underrepresentation and retention in mathematics across the pipeline. Her scholarship has been published in top-tiered journals such as Educational Researcher, Review of Educational Research, Teachers College Record, Harvard Education Review, and the Journal of Negro Education. 

Her activist work includes founding the March for Black Women in STEM, an event held every fall that seeks to bring together communities to raise awareness about issues Black women and girls face in STEM learning, education, and industry. Her new grant Measuring Inclusive Constructs of Mathematics Identity (MICMI) starts with Black girls as they identify the intersectional assets needed for more effective math learning that transcend a physical space or curriculum. 

Dr. Peter Liljedahl is a Professor of Mathematics Education at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver Canada. He is the former president of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME), the current president of the Canadian Mathematics Education Study Group (CMESG), senior editor for the International Journal of Science and Mathematics Education (IJSME) and a member of the NCTM Research Committee. Peter is a former high school mathematics teacher who has kept his research interest and activities close to the classroom. He consults regularly with teachers, schools, school districts, and ministries of education on issues of teaching and learning, assessment, and numeracy. 

Dan Meyer taught high school math to students who didn't like high school math. He has advocated for better math instruction on CNN, Good Morning America, Everyday With Rachel Ray, and TED.com. He earned his doctorate from Stanford University in math education and is the Director of Research in Desmos Classroom at Amplify where he explores the future of math, technology, and learning. He has worked with teachers internationally and in all fifty United States. He lives in Oakland, CA.

Sunil Singh is an author, storyteller, and a porous educator. His third book Chasing Rabbits: A Curious Guide to a Lifetime of Mathematical Wellness is advocating for reimagining the the world of mathematics through storytelling from the past to create new, self-sustaining and broader purposes for the subject. He is a program advisor at Amplify Math, where he is helping curate math history/compelling narrative into their K to 12 curriculum. He is also a content creator at Mathigon, a free resource for beautiful and interactive mathematics. He is also on The Board of Directors of the Human Restoration Project, a non-profit initiative which is aligned to his efforts in math education. Some of the more interesting places he has presented include The Museum of Mathematics, The Fields Institute in Toronto, and The Conservatory of Music, also in Toronto. 

Benediktsson-Karwa Professor of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College,California, studies the application of combinatorics, geometry, and topology to problems in the social sciences. One example is the subject of “fair division”: developing usable algorithms for dividing assets or liabilities fairly among several people, so that each is satisfied. This research was picked up in a news story by the New York Times. Other recent research includes applications of convex geometry to the study of voting problems.

Zalman Usiskin is a professor emeritus of education at the University of Chicago, where he was an active faculty member from 1969 through 2007. In 1983 he helped initiate the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project (UCSMP) and he served as its overall director from 1987 until June of 2019.  He is the author or co-author of over 150 articles and other papers on mathematics and mathematics education, dozens of books and book-length research monographs, including textbooks and their teachers’ editions for grades 7-12 and a college-level mathematics text for teachers.  In 2014, NCTM published a book containing 38 of his talks and articles, the first time the organization published a collection of writings of one person.  He received the Glenn Gilbert Award (now the Ross Taylor/Glenn Gilbert National Leadership Award) from NCSM in 1994, a Lifetime Achievement Award from NCTM in 2001, and the ISDDE Prize for Lifetime Achievement from the International Society for Design and Development in Education in 2018.  Zal has been the banquet speaker, singing and presenting at the piano twice for NCTM annual meetings, but the first time collaborating with Andy Chukerman. 

José Luis Vilson is a veteran educator, writer, speaker, and activist in New York City, NY. He is the author of This Is Not A Test: A New Narrative on Race, Class, and Education. He has spoken about education, math, and race for a number of organizations and publications, including the New York Times, The Guardian, TED, El Diario / La Prensa, and The Atlantic.

He's a National Board Certified Teacher, a Math for America Master Teacher, and the executive director of EduColor, an organization dedicated to race and social justice issues in education. He is currently a doctoral student studying sociology and education at Teachers College, Columbia University. He is now on the board of directors for the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards and PowerMyLearning.

Trena Wilkerson is a mathematics education professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the School of Education at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. She taught high school mathematics for 18 years. She is the current NCTM President and has published in several of NCTM’s journals, Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, Mathematics Teacher, Teaching Children Mathematics, and Journal of Research in Mathematics Education, chaired the MTMS Editorial Panel and served on the NCTM Board of Directors. She loves teaching and learning mathematics in support of current and future mathematics teachers and leaders!
