February MTLT Teacher Talk

Presented by:
Grades:

The February MTLT Teacher Talk will meet to talk about an article from the legacy journal Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School: "Social Justice and Proportional Reasoning" by Ksenija Simic-Muller.

Classroom Conversations: Cultivating Mathematics Classrooms That Foster Varied Paths of Learning and Understanding (Open to All)

Presented by: Lisa Roetker, Elizabeth Suazo-Flores,
Grades:

During this session, we will discuss how we opened up a textbook task and utilized manipulatives to cultivate a learning environment where middle and high school learners felt empowered in their varied mathematical thought processes.

Classroom Conversations: Construct It! The Great Mini-Golf Project (Open to All)

Presented by: Sandy Vorensky,
Grades:

The Great Mini-Golf Project capitalizes on students’ lived experiences of playing miniature golf. Through authentic engagement and collaboration with peers, students can create their own visual representations and practical explanations of math concepts. This webinar will provide an outline of how to implement this project along with practical strategies for success in the classroom.

Classroom Conversations: Understanding the Structures of Shapes: Connecting 2D and 3D Representations (Open to All)

Presented by: Joana Conceição,
Grades:

During this session, we will share how first graders solved the "Can you build it?" task, where they were asked to build 3D shapes based on 2D depictions. Students' initial 3-D creations often need revision, and as they build and rebuild, they develop spatial relationships. Moving constantly between 2D and 3D leads to a stronger spatial sense that helps students unveil the shapes’ structures, an important topic in mathematics and recommended as a mathematical practice. This session will be hosted in Portuguese, with captions in English.

Conversas em sala de aula: Compreendendo as estruturas das formas: conectando representações 2D e 3D (Open to All)

Presented by: Joana Conceição,
Grades:
