Chapter 11: “Coaching and Elementary Mathematics Specialists: Findings from Research.” Patricia F. Campbell (University of Maryland) shares a research study focused on twelve elementary school math coaches (math specialists) in Virginia. Two important findings of her research are: (1) a specialist’s positive effect developed over time, and (2) teacher beliefs changed in direct relationship to the amount of time spent with the math specialist. The implications of this research are that coaches need time to develop their craft and that deep and lasting change in teachers’ practice is created by consistent, coherent models of coaching.
