In coordination with the NCTM Annual Meeting in Washington DC, we are excited to provide training for and organize mathematics teachers, leaders, and higher education faculty with advocacy inclinations to do Hill visits. These meetings will take place on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, will provide you an opportunity to share common concerns and asks, provide insights into what is happening in mathematics education in your classrooms, schools, and communities, and explain how federal policies could address specific challenges. Preparing for Your Visit
NCTM will prepare you for these visits, starting with virtual preparatory sessions before you arrive in Washington, DC. These will help frame your visits so you know what to expect, as well as share a common set of issues and talking points, so we can build momentum for shared concerns. Will also help you think about specific stories or episodes you can share to help bring these issues alive.
On the morning of October 25, we will meet, hear from staffers and fellow math teachers who are now on Capitol Hill, review talking points and “leave-behinds” materials we will supply you, and highlight the timely and important asks of lawmakers. The morning session prior to the Hill visit will include up-to-the-minute updates on what is happening on the Hill relevant to mathematics education and related policy discussions.
We will also be there to answer any last-minute questions and address any other concerns. In addition, participants will have access to an app that will manage visit schedules and more.
