Algebra Readiness

  • Algebra Readiness for All Students (Grades 6-8)

Description: This workshop will engage participants in hands-on activities focused on developing algebraic reasoning. Throughout the workshop participants will engage in content-focused sessions as well as sessions that highlight the mathematics teaching practices. The content for grade 6 will focus on concepts related to ratio, rate, and variable as fundamental concepts in the development of an understanding of expressions and equations. Grade 7 will focus on expressions and equations as fundamental concepts in the development of an understanding of functions. Grade 8 will focus on concepts related to functions that lead to an understanding of relationships among quantities represented in multiple ways. Additional content will highlight productive teaching practices that promote mathematical thinking in the classroom. These practices link to Principles to Actions and the Standards for Mathematical Practice. This content will address – facilitating effective mathematical discourse, building student responsibility within the community, and posing purposeful questions.

Goal: The goal of this workshop is to provide an interactive professional learning experience that enables participants to experience the growth of algebraic thinking and reasoning across the grades in order to prepare students for algebra.

    Outcomes: Participants will

Gain strategies to build the foundation of knowledge and skills to support students' future success in algebra.

Use Principles to Actions as a tool for learning new instructional techniques for posing purposeful questions, engaging students in productive discourse, and building student responsibility within the community of learners.

Learn strategies for implementing tasks that promote reasoning and problem solving and provide all students with opportunities to develop strong algebraic reasoning skills, including the development of conjectures and generalizations.

Determine the role of the Standards for Mathematical Practice in instructional strategies and assessments.

Understand how concepts within various college and career-readiness standards support algebraic reasoning.
