    Thomas A. Romberg served NCTM as chair of the Commission on Standards for School Mathematics from 1986 to 1995. He directed the writing of NCTM's first Standards document, Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics. He also chaired the Commission on the Assessment Standards and guided the final writing process of NCTM's Assessments for School Mathematics.

    In addition to working with NCTM, Romberg actively supported other mathematics education-related organizations such as the American Statistical Association, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Mathematical Sciences Education Board. He directed the National Center for Research in Mathematical Sciences Education (1987-1996) and the National Center for Improving Student Learning and Achievement in Mathematics and Science (1996-1999).

    Romberg has received numerous awards and grants, presented topics at many conferences, and written a significant number of books, monographs, and reports.

    One nominator wrote, "Few have been so prolific and involved in mathematics education, research and measurement, and policy issues…. Tom's name always heads a list whenever spokespersons or advisers for mathematics education are being generated, no matter what group is making that list."
