Calculus is simultaneously a foundational course for advanced studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and a barrier to entry for many students interested in these fields. The authors critically review research on the students’ understandings of limits, the derivative, and the integral. They also examine research on efforts to improve the teaching and learning of calculus.
