Chapter 5: “An Urban Partnership Rooted in Putting Principles of a Formative Assessment System into Practice.” DeAnn Huinker (University of Wisconsin–Madison) and Henry Kranendonk and Janis Freckmann (Milwaukee Public Schools) describe how the Milwaukee school district and the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee formed a strong collaboration, the Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership, that focused on linking classroom practice in mathematics to research-based principles of formative assessment in grades 3–8. Ten principles of formative assessment are given, and examples are provided of how the district/university partnership improved classroom practice and student learning.
