Abstract:
An activity about two methods presented by students for finding the area of figures made with rubber bands on a geoboard. Discusses teaching area of polygons and Pick's Theorem. Activities are hands-on, open-ended activities that encourage problem solving, reasoning, communication, and mathematical connections. Includes worksheets for introducing two methods for finding area of polygons and comments and suggestions for classroom use. Activities is a regular feature of Mathematics Teacher and highlights activities that develop conceptual understanding of mathematics topics.
