An activity to construct an ellipse using computer software and an "envelope." The benefits of using software effectively to develop conceptual understanding of figures that are difficult to draw. Activities are hands-on, open-ended activities that encourage problem solving, reasoning, communication, and mathematical connections. Includes worksheets and solutions for exploring the charateristics of an ellipse. Activities is a regular feature of Mathematics Teacher and highlights activities that develop conceptual understanding of mathematics topics.
