Activities for Students: Using Overhead Projectors to Explore Size Change Transformations

Michael Edwards

March 2005, Volume 98, Issue 7, Page 498

Abstract:
An activity using overhead projectors focused on teaching congruence and transformations. Geometry students explore shape and movement via their graphing calculators, room transformations, and size changes with the overhead. Activities are hands-on, open-ended activities that encourage problem solving, reasoning, communication, and mathematical connections. Activities is a regular feature of Mathematics Teacher and highlights activities that develop conceptual understanding of mathematics topics. Transformational properties of overhead projectors are explored to enhance student understanding of concepts such as scale factor, fit equations, y-intercept, slope, square roots, and parabolic equations.
