Activities for Students: Averaging Rates: Deciding When to Use the Harmonic or Arithmetic Mean

S. Brown, M. Rizzardi

May 2005, Volume 98, Issue 9, Page 626

Abstract:
An activity about averaging rates  focused on teaching how to use the harmonic or arithmetic mean. Students learn to recognize which mean, harmonic or arithmetic, is appropriate. Activity sheets are included.  Activities are hands-on, open-ended activities that encourage problem solving, reasoning, communication, and mathematical connections. Activities is a regular feature of Mathematics Teacher and highlights activities that develop conceptual understanding of mathematics topics. The article describes the harmonic mean and explores situations for using it. Activities that involve hands-on practice for students are provided.
