Abstract:

Information and ideas relevant to the development of appropriate mathematics for children in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten. Addresses teacher's need to support young children's emerging mathematics understanding in a context that conforms to current knowledge about the ways young children learn mathematics. When teachers and families work together, young children experience important benefits. Teachers must strive to form collaborative relationships with families that empower them to become active participants in their children’s mathematical learning. This article describes what it means to “empower” families and offers specific strategies for teachers to enable and encourage families to contribute to their child’s mathematical development in meaningful ways.
