Investigations
investigations: Generating Meaning for Range, Mode, Median, and Mean

November 2009, Volume 16, Issue 4, Page 246

Abstract:

Hands-on, open-ended activities that encourage problem solving, reasoning, communication, and mathematical connections. Activities are classroom-tested, ready for immediate use in the classroom, and contain extensions that the student or teacher might consider. How do we make sense of statements such as, “The average U.S. household has 2.24 television sets”? Before this investigation, range, mode, median, and mean were new concepts to these fifth graders.
