    NCTM Board of Directors Meeting Summary October 2020

    At its virtual meeting October 23-24, 2020 the NCTM Board of Directors:

    • Received a report from the Budget and Finance Committee and an update on NCTM’s operating budget and finances.
    • Engaged in strategic work intended to guide development of the fiscal year 2022 NCTM operating budget.
    • Discussed adapting the NCTM Annual Meeting and Exposition, scheduled for St. Louis in April 2021, to be a virtual conference.
    • Received an update and discussed plans for a 2021 NCTM Virtual Conference.
    • Engaged in a discussion about developing an NCTM statement on issues related to social justice and mathematics education in a broader social context and decided to convene an additional Board meeting for further discussion.
    • Discussed potential changes to the development of the program for the NCTM Research Conference.
    • Received and discussed a report from the Board liaisons and staff of the Publishing Committee addressing operations and revenue from NCTM publications.
    • Reviewed and determined a future process for revising and updating all NCTM position statements
    • Approved new appointments to volunteer committees and groups.
    • Received updates and reports on Membership and Marketing, Professional Services, Publications, Advocacy, Catalyzing Change, Mathematics Teaching and Learning PreK-12, and the Mathematics Education Trust.

    NCTM Board of Directors Meeting Summary July 2020

    At its virtual meeting July 6-8, 2020 the NCTM Board of Directors:

    • Reviewed preliminary FY 2020 yearend budget results.
    • Engaged in facilitated strategic planning, which included reviewing the NCTM Mission Statement and Strategic Framework.
    • Engaged in small group work to identify and develop a shared vision for a framework for future decision-making based on Why NCTM.
    • Discussed work of the Conference Advisory Group, including its recommendations for the future and format of NCTM conferences, including virtual conference offerings.
    • Received updates on Membership, Professional Services, Publications, Advocacy, Catalyzing Change, and the Mathematics Education Trust.

    NCTM Annual Business Meeting April 2020

    April 3, 2020

    In lieu of the cancellation of the NCTM Centennial Annual Meeting & Exposition, scheduled for April 1-4, the annual NCTM Business Meeting, included in the program of the Centennial Annual Meeting, was held via Zoom on April 3, 2020.

    • Executive Director Ken Krehbiel explained that the legal requirement to have a public Business Meeting at the NCTM Annual Meeting was being satisfied by the meeting via Zoom because the Centennial Annual Meeting was cancelled after the Governor of Illinois mandated that there could be no gatherings of more than 1,000 in the state.
    • NCTM President Robert Berry reported that NCTM had received an unmodified or clean opinion from the auditors for fiscal year 2019 and presented an overview of the Council’s financial information.
    • Robert Berry reported that NCTM has net assets of $14.5 million. He reported the allocation of operating revenue of $2.5 million in Products, $4.7 million in Membership and Subscriptions, and $5.2 million in Conference Services.

    The following were highlighted in a summary of the past year’s major accomplishments and initiatives:

    • Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PreK-12, was launched in January 2020 as a consolidated, single journal for practitioners.
    • “Catalyzing Change in Early Childhood and Elementary Mathematics” and “Catalyzing Change in Middle School Mathematics” were published to be released and on sale at the Centennial Annual Meeting.
    • 100 Days of Professional Learning was developed to present sessions that were selected for the Centennial Annual Meeting program as webinars or online sessions on separate days over 100 days beginning the week of the Centennial Annual Meeting and until NCTM’s first fall Annual Meeting in St. Louis in October. The first session was April 1.
    • NCTM Board members have met with their members of Congress in individual meetings on Capitol Hill.
    • At the conclusion of the meeting, Robert stated that he was honored to serve as NCTM President over the past two years; he then introduced Trena Wilkerson as NCTM President. Trena thanked Robert for his mentorship and leadership in building community, especially in areas of equity.
    • Ken Krehbiel reported that Robert would be thanked and recognized publicly at the Annual Meeting in St. Louis October.

      NCTM Board of Directors Meeting Summary February 2020

      At its meeting at NCTM Headquarters in Reston, Virginia on February 21-22, 2020 the Board of Directors:

      • Approved the fiscal year 2021 NCTM operating budget presented to the Board by the Budget and Finance Committee.
      • Approved an updated charge for the Classroom Resources Committee.
      • Approved an updated charge for the ASA/NCTM Joint Committee on K-12 Statistics Education.
      • Approved one in-person meeting of the Conference Advisory Group to expand its work on making recommendations for the future of NCTM conferences.
      • Approved policies and procedures for registrations to NCTM conferences.
      • Approved a gender-neutral language policy for NCTM publications.
      • Approved a revision to the NCTM Policy Handbook to clarify the composition of the NCTM Budget and Finance Committee.
      • Discussed current practices for increasing submissions and nominations to the Nominations and Elections Committee with the goal of increasing representation of classroom teachers on the NCTM Board of Directors.
      • Approved GAISE-2 (Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education), which is co-published with the American Statistical Association, as a position of the Council.
      • Approved appointments to NCTM standing committees and joint committees for 2020-2021.
      • Discussed and began to develop a framework for the Board’s strategic planning in July.
